One thing’s for certain: You’ll want durability and easy cleanability. We all know kids are messy. They spill, drag pull toys, and can be noisy.
What about comfort? It’s not just comfort for the child, but also for the adults who will be playing on the floor with that child.
Here are some choices for your residential flooring installation, from Young Interiors:
● Laminate (with maybe an area rug): Laminate is ultra-strong and it has that clear protective wear layer over the photograph, which can look remarkably like wood or stone. It is water-resistant, but not water-proof, so spills need to be wiped up immediately. Here’s where the area rug comes in; one of the big trends this year is to add color in a kids room, so a rug can provide that, as well as an element of warmth.
The biggest advantage of using an area rugs is if spills occur, you can spot-clean, or just replace the rug altogether.
By the way, you don’t need to worry about hard falls with laminate; if it’s installed with an underlayment, falls and dropped items will be absorbed.
Also, if you do want hardwood flooring, the area rug trick will work just as well with that.
● Wall-to-wall carpeting. It can actually make the room look bigger, because you don’t have the visual breakup of rugs, and it certainly provides a comfortable place to sit or lie on the floor. It does require regular professional cleaning, because vacuuming alone isn’t enough to get rid of particles. You need to go deep into the fiber. But contrary to some myths, carpeting doesn’t exacerbate allergies and asthma; the fibers just trap the dirt until it’s steam-cleaned away.
One of the best things about this type of flooring is that it absorbs noise.
