Slip-resistant surfaces slow the movement between your bare feet and the floor of your walk-in shower, from the time you first step in until you're ready to towel off. Your flooring should facilitate friction and/or surface adhesion to promote solid footing in wet conditions. The standard industry measurement for slip-resistance is the coefficient of friction, which must measure 0.60 or higher for safety in wet areas like your bathroom shower. The following flooring materials offer options that meet or exceed these COF standards:
- Textured porcelain or ceramic tile
While porcelain is the gold standard in the bathroom, due to its density and higher water resistance, ceramic tile with a surface sealant can also work well as shower flooring. Be sure that the tile has a surface that is textured expressly for the purpose of slip resistance, and have it professionally installed to eliminate the hazards caused by loose, improperly set tiles.
- Natural stone floor tile
Natural stone tile flooring has an uneven, pitted surface that provides the friction you need to avoid slipping in a wet shower. Tumbled travertine tile, for example, is both a safe and beautiful choice for your bathroom because of its slip-resistant surface and its fabulous, contemporary rustic look. What's more, stone tile is naturally water-resistant. It may have a higher price point than other bathroom flooring options, but natural stone tile has the added value of being a green product with minimal chemical emissions.
- Vinyl tile
Textured vinyl tile and luxury vinyl tile can be attractive options for flooring your bathroom. They are water-resistant, ergonomic and good-looking. However, since vinyl products tend to be more slippery than textured porcelain or stone, be sure to confirm that the vinyl flooring you are considering for your walk-in shower meets slip-resistant standards.
