Buying a hardwood floor involves many choices. You have several options when it comes to wood type, color, plank style and price. Another important consideration is the floor's luster level, which is determined by what percentage of light is reflected off of it from a 60-degree angle. The luster level determines how shiny or glossy your floor looks, and it also affects how it functions. Here's a brief guide to help you understand the four common luster levels of hardwood flooring products.
A full-gloss or glossy finish has about a 70-percent luster factor. You often see glossy finishes on wood floors in commercial gymnasiums and bowling alleys. The benefits of having a glossy finish are mostly aesthetic; if you love a gleaming shine, they're your best option. Unfortunately, there's a price to pay for all that glimmer. Glossy floors tend to make imperfections and scratches more visible. They're also more slippery and may pose a fall hazard for kids, elderly family members or even your dog.
Semi-gloss finishes provide about 55 percent luster. If you like a shiny floor but need something a little more practical, this might be a great compromise. The slight reduction in shine helps to hide minor scratches but still reflects enough light to create the look you love.
Satin finishes are currently the most popular choice for residential wood floors. Providing about 40 percent luster, they offer a moderate amount of sheen, but they're easier to clean and maintain than glossier finishes. If you have kids or pets, or you like to walk barefoot in your home, you won’t have to worry as much about footprints, dust or wear-and-tear. Satin-finish floors look new longer than other types. They give a contemporary feel to your decor without taking over the show.
A matte finish only gives you about 25 percent luster. It has a flat, clean look that works well with rustic decor and requires little daily maintenance to maintain its appearance. Matte finish is a great choice if you're concerned about safety as it gives you the most traction.
