A new floor is exciting and, while you’re anxious to start enjoying it, you’ll need to be sure your new flooring installation is wholly cured before doing so. It would be best if you were sure nothing would shift and move, especially with flooring types that use grout, mortar, or have seams.
While timelines can vary somewhat depending on the type of floor, finish, climate, and more, the general rule is to wait 24 hours before walking on it. The floor will still be fragile, so it's essential to be gentle and avoid scuffs and dirt; that means stocking feet and no shoes.
As for pets, don’t let them play on it for two days and don’t move heavy furniture in for about a week and, as always, don’t hesitate to come into our carpet store in Longs, SC, if you have questions or concerns.
When a carpet installation can be walked on immediately
If the carpet is installed with the glue-down method, you can walk on it immediately. Some installers recommend walking on the carpet sooner than later because it will help the rug adhere to the glue. With this method, you can also move furniture back within 24 hours but only if the glue is dry; if not, it will leave permanent marks and damage the rug. Another installation method, stretch, may change the timeline, so talk to your installer.
How often should new carpet be vacuumed?
We recommend vacuuming twice a week, which will not hurt an installation. First, you don't want dirt to embed; it can act like tiny razor blades and fray the fiber. Vacuuming will also help to remove pet dander and other particles and keep it bright and fluffy.
Most importantly, a new rug might fuzz, referring to fibers becoming loose from the yarn bundle, for about three months after installation. This isn't a defect, but it can be exacerbated by dirt. Just keep vacuuming the rug, and eventually, it will stop, but if it still goes on after three months, seek your flooring pro's advice.
